Exchange between high school students in British Columbia, Canada and high school students in Kushiro City, Hokkaido through ice hockey. In addition to the friendly matches with local high school teams, the exchange was enjoyed not just by the ice hockey players but by their parents as well, through school visits and participation in various events.

The Canadian players and parents were Japanese-Canadians with roots in Japan. By visiting schools and experiencing Japanese culture such as kendo, judo and the tea ceremony, performing zen meditation at temples and making wishes at shrines, and participating in traditional events such as carrying mikoshi at festivals, the event deepened exchanges with local people through homestays and enabled deep learning about the culture of their ancestors. In addition, lessons were held in English for local elementary school students while enjoying ice hockey, and exchanges were made possible with many local people, not just the ice hockey players.

Feedback from Participant :

Even with the language barrier, I was most pleased that my heart was in communication with Japanese people of my generation through ice hockey. In addition, I could experience various cultural exchanges and experiences as well as the ice hockey, making unforgettable memories for the rest of my life. Even if I have opportunities to come to Japan on holiday in the future, these experiences were truly wonderful once-in-a-lifetime exchanges.
