University student volunteers were dispatched to the Maui Marathon 2016. The university students who volunteered participated in the operation of the marathon as staff members. With their participation in the operation of an international sporting event, these university students can expect to grow as people who can be active globally.

Approximately 350 runners from Japan participated in this marathon, and because the rate of diffusion of the Japanese language is lower on Maui than it is on Oahu, the event office required Japanese volunteers. Having Japanese volunteers cooperate in the operation of the event as staff members contributed to the securing of runners at the event and backed the revitalization of the Maui region. Also, this project is part of a series of talent education programs, and after these university students returned home activity research presentations were also held. These students now have an understanding of the venues where international events are held, and this event also has the significance of being an opportunity for these students to form a career image that is active globally.

Feedback from Organize :

After we entered the local site of Maui together with volunteers from the office that is operating the event, local volunteers, and university students, we felt a great deal of significance in providing, while crossing language boundaries, services to Japanese runners and to the runners who came from Hawaii, from the continental United States, and from other places all around the world. In order to broaden the future careers and international views of university students, and for the benefit of local communities, we would like to continue engaging in such initiatives.
