【Bhutan】 “Sports School Caravan” held in Bhutan to popularize the Undokai
The Japan Sport Council was re-commissioned by the Japan Overseas Cooperative Association to extend the progress of health and physical education in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Through the Sports Class Caravan (SCC), they went from school to school in a caravan to introduce Japan’s Undokai sports competition and create actual opportunities to experience it.
Ten target schools in the Kingdom of Bhutan received physical education classes and were introduced to the Undokai (long-rope jumping, two-person, three-legged races, leapfrog, tug of war) and given a chance to experience it. The children who took part showed a lot of interest in the Undokai, especially with the tug of war. The country understands the importance of exercise and has few physical education teachers, which is why there is little physical activity. All the activities introduced are easy to take part in. The teachers and the school see the activities as a new opportunity for gaining knowledge. During this project, we didn’t only introduce the Undokai; we also moved our bodies to the beat of a Bhutan-flavored Radio Taiso called Yongilusion. It was done during morning assembly and was a lot of fun to do with not only the all students but also the teachers.
Also, at the Paro College of Education, some of the teachers who are leaders in popularizing physical education and the Undokai started a trainer education program where they teach give pointers on how to hold continual physical education and sporting events and pass along some techniques and skills. There are high expectations for progress in physical education in the schools of Bhutan.
